❂ Why you should not miss it
The Otter Center was founded in 1989 by the former State Forestry Corps, today the Biodiversity Carabinieri Department, in cooperation with other Italian and European research groups, with the aim of promoting actions aimed at protecting the species by following specific guidelines. In Italy, this species is one of the most endangered and this place was chosen because, between the Orta and the Orfento rivers, there was a small population of wild otters, evidence of the high natural quality of these watercourses. The center began to work mainly for the repopulation and subsequently for a possible reintroduction of the otters reared in the natural environment. For this purpose, from the beginning, the animals have been bred in a way that has allowed them to maintain a natural and, as far as possible, wild state, avoiding contact with humans as much as possible.
