The Hermitage of San Bartolomeo and the Giumentina Valley
Sunday, October 22, 2023 - 3pm

Historical-naturalistic hiking at sunset in the Maiella National Park
Abruzzo, a land of hermitages which find their highest concentration on the Maiella. That of San Bartolomeo, in the Maiella Park, is certainly one of the most fascinating in Abruzzo, camouflaged within a natural balcony in the valley by the same name. To reach it, during our hike we will start from the characteristic village of Decontra to cross the panoramic Giumentina Valley. It will be a journey through the millennial history of mankind.

❂ Why you should not miss it
The starting point, the village of Decontra, is a small paradise of neat stone houses close to the Orfento Valley. The path then moves on to the Giumentina Valley, a marvellous place with a multi-millennial history, frequented by man since the Paleolithic era. Here the path makes its way through wide meadows dotted with colorful blooms, crowned by the Maiella and the wild Morrone, and it is possible to see the deep blue of the sea in the distance. Arriving at the edge of the San Bartolomeo valley, you enter a canyon that seems to belong to another continent, but your gaze is captured by the hermitage, harmoniously set in a cave, almost imperceptible to the eye. Once at the hermitage of San Bartolomeo, the experience is unique: it is still possible to perceive, almost eight centuries later, the atmosphere and the load of spirituality experienced by Pietro da Morrone.
